Have any of you ever heard of Steampunk?
Colleen has quite a few friends who are involved in the genre. Wikipedia characterizes steampunk as ” a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980’s.” The dictionary summarizes it as “a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century …”
After much surfing of the web, I think I came to understand the movement that is rapidly growing in popularity. Well, let’s just say I think I can now attempt the caddie that Col would like to give as a gift. This gift is for a new baby, a boy I believe, so I immediately thought of teddy bears. Now to punk out the teddies………..
The ceramic teddies were cut out, fired and ready to paint. Steven and I had an excuse to go thirft store shopping, yahoo….. and we found an broken wind up clock to take apart and use. In my craft closet abyss, I found some faux leather also. It was time, no pun intended, to get to work.
I must admit, I had a hard time punking out poor teddy! I had to keep reminding myself that “this is what they like”. The challenge was to keep it looking more like a bear than a cylon. Don’t get me wrong, I love Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, and most of Star Trek. This bear had to retain some of its cuteness right? Well, after trading emails with Col, here is the end result for the teddies.
The bomber hat was one addition that helped them remain boyishly cute. I just needed to add some detailing and then sew the lining of the box and finish it up. Whew, I thought I was near the finish line!
Think again, someone fiddled with the attached clock pieces while I was a work and broke some off. Luckily, Steven was able to get the old glue off with out damaging any other parts. We reattached, this time moving it into my office, no more curious fingers. Delays, delays, delays. Never fails when you have a deadline. The box was ready for attaching the bears…………………. and Murphy’s Law works! The tape held the first bear in place perfectly, whew one down, one to go. Steven attached the second bear while I was at work, this time the tape got testy, the bear was attached but not in the same place Steven put it. This time I had to let Col know it was not going to be to her in time. Sorry!
Thank goodness it was for Col, someone else wouldn’t have been as understanding. We prevailed though, it is all ready to go………….
While not my favorite piece, it sure was a challenging piece! But wait, Col asked for another caddie. Another baby caddie as well. Another challenge too. Come back to check out how well I tackled this one……… Until next time, Cyn
