Is There Space for A Vanity in Here? January 21, 2013

Before we bought our house we were renting a house with friends. It was a nice size 4 bedroom house and we had the master bedroom. I had dreamed of having a vanity to sit at in the morning to get ready for work. Since we had the room I got an old desk from my parents and bought a mirror from Good Will and set up my vanity.

The bedroom in our home is smaller so there was no room for the desk and I gave it to the old roommates to keep since they needed an extra desk. Now I am back to square one.

How do I create a vanity in our small room and not lose all the walking space?

Ashlin and I were talking about it one night and he came up with an idea. He offered to mount a 2×6 to the wall so I could use that as a vanity. My husband is so sweet! He will help me to plan just about anything, even though he may not fully understand why I want or need it. I am so spoiled! ….. I know I am a goshy happy newly wed =)

So with the idea in mind I started to try to plan out exactly what I would need and where I wanted to put it.  One 2×6 would have probably worked but I wanted to use the two baskets that I had already organized my makeup and hair supplies in but how could I accomplish this?

I started looking online for ideas and I found this photo.

That is what I am looking for!! Now all I have to do is decide the location and write down the measurements of what I want.

Stay tuned to see the project continue…

Stumped on Rearrangement of Spare Room December 21, 2012

Have you ever had a vision of how you wanted a room to look, get the furniture all in place then find that it does not work?

Well I have now experienced that. I was setting up some of the last remaining areas in the spare/craft room and I was happy with it until I went to plug-in the computer….

There is only one outlet on the side of the room and it is only a two prong outlet. I need a three so I can have it set up on a surge protector. Now looking at the room I realize that I am going to have to rearrange most of the room. I mean of course I could wire in a new outlet there that looks like a grounded outlet but isn’t but I do not want to do that because the outlet is not broken.

When you walked in you saw this

Spare Room 1

Futon couch with crafts piled on it. Then if you turned around, you saw…

Craft table on the left (at the time used for village) and on the right you had a cabinet with drawers on bottom and shelves on top next to a dresser with the computer desk in the window.

To be honest I really was not thinking about height in the room. In all my plans I honestly did not consider how do it would look if I had all the tall furniture together in one area of the room.

Okay so for some people it might not look odd but to me it does, but what am I going to do?

Rudolph and Decked Halls Brings a Smile! December 19, 2012

Christmas is my favorite, if I have not mentioned it enough. That being said I have more decorations for Christmas than any other. By majority the decorations are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

New Ruddie

My husband Ashlin bought this for me before the move and I love it! As I have grown nothing has dulled the happiness this brings me and nothing ever will!

This is the first year that I was able to display my village. My Grandma Boyle always had her nativity out and I still remember where she put it in her house in Sebastopol. If I close my eyes I can even see it clearly in my memory. I wonder where she puts it in her new house? Hmm food for thought.

This year I get to follow her tradition but in my own special way. I have the Rudolph village that my parents gave me for my birthday/Christmas combo gift a few years ago. I was going to put if on my coffee bar but I did not have enough room so I had to rethink things. I decided to put in the spare/craft room. I have my great grandma’s table with has two folding wings and a leaf. I inserted the leaf and put my village on the table. With the leaf in place I still have room to flip-up one of the sides and do some crafting. Plus I still get to have my village out.

Village

I will have to think of another way to display it next year so I can have it out in the living room but I have all year to think about that =)

What does your house look like all decorated? Do you have a favorite theme for your decorations?

Decorating Small White Bathroom December 12, 2012

In the rental house we have a small bathroom with really did not have much room for anything. We are excited to have an average size bathroom now. I am also excited about having a bath tub again!

Unpacking and setting up the bathroom was a process. First I hung the shower curtain and mildew resistant microfiber shower curtain liner. My parents bought one for the main bathroom and it is amazing. It can get stained but it is machine washable. Hooray! No more scrubbing a plastic liner for me!

The decorative shower curtain is part of a set I received as a gift. The set also includes a cup, toothbrush holder, soap dish, tissue box cover and trash can. The design is a pretty clover pattern in shades of green. It also has slight hints of brown and grey in the shadowing of the leaves. We have green and grey towels to match.

Since we both like Irish, Scottish and Celtic knots I added a white and green shamrock to the wall. The cabinet under the sink is deep and has a good amount of space for all of our supplies but eventually we may need to add some drawers or baskets for organization.

My husband wants to set out his shaving kit since he shaves every morning before work. The cabinet above the toilet has an open shelf at the bottom and the top. I bought him a basket to keep his kit in and the basket fits perfectly on the bottom shelf.

We added a free-standing mirror with a basin around the bottom to the sink counter so that he can keep his brushes there.

It is a neat kit and so far I like the way he has displayed it but what can I say, I am already looking at how I can improve it to get is more space.

This is our bathroom with lively green and comforting grey.

Now to go shopping for some wall color to reduce the white and make it look bigger.
